註：白石筆下人物常具自況之意，如「也可歇歇」，如「人罵我，我也罵人」，既幽默，又不乏自嘲，實其生活中種種經歷之反映，如此取題多見於三十年代，本幅亦屬其一。

「老當益壯」者，畫中老人圓頭秃首，鬚眉俱白，寬袍闊袖，袒胸露腹，一手下垂，另手高舉，執杖有力，似屆耆齡仍體健身壯。白石寫此，衣袖線條，粗筆濃墨，雄渾有力，下袴、鞋履，以至手杖筆直，亦簡練精準，揮灑自如，且四字篆書題畫，結體緊湊，架構穩重，對照畫家寫時應逾古稀，恰好對應畫題所示。
