上款：「豔秋」即程硯秋（1904-1958），滿洲正黃旗人。早歲家道中落，典身學戲，初習武生，因扮相佻麗，轉學花旦，攻青衣，才資優異，十二歲即以藝名程菊儂嶄露頭角。後倒嗓，得羅惇曧襄助，贖身出師。復元後隨名師如王瑤卿、梅蘭芳等深造鍛煉，技藝益進，創「程派」新腔，成京劇之開派大師。

註：「癭公」即羅惇曧（1872-1924），廣東順德人。先後就讀廣雅書院、萬木草堂，拜康有為門下。一九○三年中副貢後赴京任職，與當地文藝界時相過從，以詩文書法得享時譽。民國後，賣文鬻字爲生，著作廣涉詩歌、文學、史故、戲劇等。

癭公醉心京劇，與梨園伶人往來密切。他深賞程硯秋才華，助其脫籍後，悉心指導，覓師訓練，後為其更名「豔秋」，並據其嗓，研音創腔，編曲寫劇多種，廣獲好評。本幅即由其所請，倩黃賓虹以程氏書齋「玉霜簃」入圖。本幅無署年，按畫風、書體所示，似屬畫家五十歲前後所出。
