上款：「儒勉」即李儒勉（1900-1956），名貴誠，江西鄱陽人。畢業於金陵大學心理學系，先後任教於東南大學及武漢大學，後赴英國，於牛津及劍橋大學深造。返國後受聘於英國駐華大使館新聞處，負責編輯工作。四五年重慶談判期間，以教育界人士身分獲毛澤東及周恩來接見。一九四八年再度赴英講學，次年經香港返北平，任職中央對外文化聯絡局。韓戰爆發，他負責反對細菌戰之文字編譯工作，並兼輔仁大學英語系主任。一九五六年病逝，遺體安葬在北京八寶山革命烈士公墓。

註：本幅乃徐悲鴻寫贈李儒勉。時值韓戰期間，畫家健康欠佳，作畫數量極少，仍奮筆力作，以奔馬四蹄凌空，呈一日千里之勢，足見下筆時精氣盈貫。或慰摯友支援「抗美援朝」致之。

李氏歿後，一直珍藏於家中。「文革」期間，李儒勉夫人寄存此幅於北京圖書館，免遭紅衛兵破壞，故畫上蓋有該館印鑑。動盪平息後，北京圖書館點檢倉庫，見畫之上款，遂鈐「註銷」印，發還李家。李氏後人後散居於中國內地及歐美，此畫亦於一九七九年底獲携帶赴美，至九九年方釋出。
