註：一九四六年秋，溥心畬南下出席制憲國民大會，居停於滬、寧間，四八年秋冬方離寧赴杭。南京寓居期間，家人、藝友、學生相伴，暫得片刻安寧，持志詩詞書畫，以消永晝。居南方頗具時日，氣候温暖潮濕，大異於京城北地，故此時作畫，尤得蘊藉溫潤之韻，且暫棲舒徐安逸之境，故筆下作品別見清逸朗潤，本幅即見此時期特色。

〈秋山夕照〉乃畫家屢寫之題材，構圖最早見於一九三九年出版之〈西山逸士畫集〉，書中〈墨巢圖〉、〈秋風策杖〉兩幅，皆為好友李宣龔製。畫集為珂羅版，故未知原畫著色，若與本幅對比，似皆小青綠設色，層層渲染，淡雅清秀，而構圖規模大致相近，惟推山移樹，則各具其概，細節略有出入。本幅見群峰翠綠，江樹青紅，山間雲氣冥濛，傑閣掩映，渚畔文人相晤閒話，正合畫上所題元人丁鶴年「 雲中樓觀無人住，只有秋聲送夕陽」句意。
