本幅流傳有緒,入民國,歷政局變易,先後經滬上兩家遞藏。錢鏡塘(1907-1983)之「數青草堂」藏任伯年畫聞名遐邇,實範圍古今廣涉,海派名家搜羅齊備,惟虛谷作品傳世甚少,故其收藏中數量亦稀,本幅即重點之一。六十年代中期,因政治環境生變,部分藏品釋出,其中海派兩家精品,任頤之〈華祝三多圖〉及本幅,輾轉歸李宇超。
李宇超(1906-1968),山東諸城人。上世紀二十年代參加革命,先後於中共中央不同部門工作,三十年代起歷任中共中央上海局秘書長,中共豫西地委委員、宣傳部長、中原軍區第一縱隊聯絡部副部長、中共河間地委副書記兼宣傳部長等職。四九年後,歷任華南大學副校長兼黨委書記,後調職山東省政府。一九六二年調中共華東局任秘書長兼機關黨委書記。李氏嗜藝術,與京滬寧等地書畫界名家如傅抱石、潘天壽、王雪濤、吳作人、沈尹默等頗有往來,獲贈作品頗多。他亦好收藏,頗重早期海上畫派名家,鑑賞眼力尤高,故「數青草堂」流出之虛谷及任頤佳作均為其所得。

拍品資料及來源
註:虛谷作品,構圖簡約,線條銳利,敷色清淡,以冷峻清逸勝。本幅秋菊蟠桃,分置不同器皿,型制一方一圓,前後擺放,高低不一,恰好襯托盆中菊瓣瘦長、桃實厚重之態。下綴折枝松果,三者合之,具添壽長年之意。雖喻祝壽,畫面不類於一般熱鬧處理,菊花淡黃,墨葉掩映,間綴含苞待放者;桃實嫩綠泛紅,綠葉交疊,盛器色或藍或赭,皆取沉鬱,既顯體積質感,與全畫色調諧協統一,俱屬畫家筆下一貫秀逸之風。紀年「癸未」,時畫家剛屆花甲之齡,亦創作大盛之期,故寫來簡潔明快,佈局自然,且屬中堂大幅,品相完好,難怪錢鏡塘重之甚矣!
