Case in overall fair condition with light signs of polishing, nicks, and scratches consistent with age and use. Lugs with some signs of polish to the faces, small surface marks and nicks. Bezel insert is replaced. Pointed crown guards in overall good condition with light wear. Case base with heavy scuffing, and several deep scratch marks likely from opening with an improper tool. Some oxidation to the coin edging. Backs of lugs with small nicks, signs of polish, and debris which may benefit from cleaning. Coronet to the crown. Crystal with light scuffing. Dial in overall very well preserved condition with light surface markings and some debris. Luminescent markers with oxidation. Hands relumed. Seconds hand with some material loss to the lume. Gilt markers and text are preserved nicely. The reference 5512 was introduced in 1959 as the first Submariner model to feature the now iconic protective crown guard case. The second generation features a chronometer grade caliber, and is further identified by the fine gilt and silvered four line print to the dial for depth measure and chronometer certification. This second series, of which the present lot belongs, also features pointed crown guards. The pointed crown guards were retired by the end of the 1960s, making this particular piece highly collectible among Rolex aficionados.
