The canvas has been lined. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the background, as well as older retouchings to the sitter's costume. The sitter's face would appear to be in generally good condition, with only very minor spots of retouching to the sitter's lips, nostrils, and left cheek. There is also some light retouching to the sitter's right hand.
