Exceptional condition overall. Minors marks and scratches consistent with great age of the mask. Beautiful remains of red and white pigments and very nice encrusted patina.

Relevant de l'univers des mythes (liés à la création des clans) qui structurent la vie spirituelle des Bwa et des peuples Gurunsi voisins, ce masque impose la puissance de l’animal sauvage qu'il personnifie. Les volumes résumés à leurs formes essentielles s'agencent en une succession de plans s'inscrivant avec force dans l'espace. A cette esthétique de la force répond la beauté du décor géométrique profondément gravé accentuant dans les lignes concentriques des yeux, la puissance de l'expression. Par l’ensemble de ses caractéristique, ce masque puise au cœur de la tradition des œuvres communes aux Bwa du sud et aux Winiama et Nunuma - peuples Gurunsi auxquels les Bwa ont probablement emprunté l'usage des masques en bois. Si son origine précise demeure incertaine, la profondeur de sa patine associée aux anciennes traces de polychromie, de même que l'usure très profonde du bois, attestent de sa précieuse conservation et de sa très grande ancienneté.
