Ce masque-heaume en bronze relève d’un étroit corpus créé au XVIIIe siècle lors de l’instauration, par l’Oba Eresoyen, d’un nouveau rituel royal annuel, l’Oduduwa. Ses rares témoins sont aujourd’hui essentiellement conservés dans des institutions publiques : Ethnologisches Museum de Berlin, British Museum, National Museum de Lagos et National Museum of African Art de Washington (Plankensteiner, Bénin. Cinq siècles d’art royal, 2007, p. 474). Caractéristique de cet ensemble prestigieux, ce fragment s’affirme par la traduction saisissante de l’esthétique de la force – notamment à travers la bouche grande ouverte aux dents apparentes, et les yeux aux pupilles écarquillées – qui contraste brillamment avec le naturalisme idéalisé des têtes commémoratives d’Oba. Selon Plankensteiner (idem), l'absence - comme ici - de serpents et de crocodiles jaillissant du nez, permet d'identifier, au sein des personnages évoqués par ces masques, la représentation de "l'enfant du monde spirituel", qui était le chef du groupe.
