Condition

Good condition overall. Upper part of the proper right arm is broken and restored. Fine patina, encrusted in some places particularly in the headdress.

Maître-sculpteur Yoruba à la renommée rayonnante, Olowe d’Ise (c. 1875-c. 1938) affirma son talent tant à travers la sculpture mobilière et monumentale que par la statuaire rituelle. A la majestueuse complexité de ses compositions architecturales – illustrée par le pilier de véranda aujourd’hui conservé au Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. n° 1996.558) – répond le très haut degré d’aboutissement de ses figurines sculptées, dont témoigne cet ere ibeji. La beauté délicate de la jeune femme – dont la posture valorise la générosité des formes, le délié des membres et la grâce du cou subtilement ployé – est sublimée par l’ample coiffure sagittale dont elle est parée. Cette coiffure, caractéristique de la main du maître, se retrouve notamment sur les ibeji du New Orleans Museum of Art (inv. n° 93.156.1-.2), ou encore sur la figure olumeye du National Museum of African Art de Washington (inv. n° 2005-6-34).
