This meat dish formed part of a dinner service commissioned by D. Frei Antonio de Sao Jose de Castro, Bishop of Oporto, Portugal, from 1789 to 1814. Other pieces of this richly decorated and unusually coloured service are in the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, U.S.A., see Palmer, 1976, pl. 11; another sauceboat is in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon, Portugal (Pinto de Matos, 1993, p. 55 left). The commission of this service reflects the continued interest in Chinese porcelain by Portuguese customers, long after the Portuguese had ceased to be the foremost European trading power in the Far East.
