Condition
A piece in good conserved condition, it has been re-polished. Minor overall marks and scratches consistent with age and use. The top displaying two faint shrinking cracks, scarcely noticeable. The brass surround with some tarnishing. Overall restorations to the marquetry, i.e. sympathetic filling to old shrinking and construction cracks or to small veneer losses. Repairs to horizontal shrinking cracks are noticeable on either sides. Small losses to the veneer of the front-right canted corner. One very small chip on the tambour door. The trelliswork marquetry retains an attractive green colour which might have been enhanced in the recent past.

Roger Vandercruse, dit Lacroix (1727-1799), received maître in 1755 Although active at first in the production of furniture in the mature Louis XV style, Roger Vandercruse is best known for his works in the Transitional style of the years between the early 1760s and the late 1770s. During this time he perfected and popularized a number of occasional tables, or meubles volants, often decorated with parquetry patterns that can sometimes enclose flowerheads. Between 1769 and 1774, through Joubert, he supplied furniture to the Garde-Meuble Royal that bore the stamp of R.V.L.C, and also worked for private clients such as the duc d’Orléans, and Madame du Barry.
