In this small archive of letters, William Henry Herbert corresponded variously with John Trumbull, George Roberts, Rufus Dwinell, Henry B. Hirst, and Messrs. Harper and Bros., among others. In a note dated the 22nd of May 1845, and sent from Newark, NJ, Herbert applies to John L. O'Sullivan, editor of the 'Democratic Review', writing: "I should like very much to supply you with a monthly critical article, on any work or topic of interest at the time, and would do so on moderate terms." Herbert wrote a series of articles for the 'Democratic Review', the majority of which were illustrative of French habits and manners, and for this work he was well paid. Indeed many of the letters present in this collection convey the more practical, business side of publishing, and highlight Herbert's efforts to cultivate a successful career as a writer.
