The original edition of one of the most compelling of all post-Civil War narratives.The author, George Henry Holliday, enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 15. After his regiment was disbanded in Washington, he re-enlisted and was sent to the Rocky Mountains to protect the frontier, guard the overland mail, and defend the government posts on the North Platte and elsewhere. A member of the 6th West Virginia Veteran Cavalry, Holliday served in Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. 'On the Plains in '65' contains accounts of the Sioux Wars, wild horses, hunting on the Powder River, buffalo in the Wind River Valley, etc. 

Incidentally, George Henry Holliday was the cousin of John Henry "Doc" Holliday. George moved west to take care his cousin during his recovery after gambler Henry Kahn shot Doc following a disagreement.
