A wonderfully executed original watercolor of wild boar hunting Wild boar hunting—or pig sticking—was a popular colonial pastime, particularly among Englishmen who had travelled to Africa or India for the purposes of big game hunting. While the aim was to return from these lands having bagged lions or tigers, the pursuit of wild boar proved a rigorous sport, challenging even the most skilled rider. The watercolor present here—unsigned, but reminiscent of Alexander Wardrop—skilfully conveys the energy of the boar, the prowess of the riders, and the general excitement of hunt. Just visible in the margin is the figure of a rider being thrown from his horse, further underscoring the difficulty and danger inherent in such an activity.
