Condition

Overall in very good condition. The metal surfaces present with very faint scratches and minor oxidation throughout, consistent with age and gentle handling. The upper rim with a few scattered minor indentations as partially visible in the catalogue illustration. The inner recessed area of the base with a few minor scattered indentations, not visually distracting. The area surrounding the cabochons with minor dirt and traces of cleaning material. Two of the stone cabochons are very faintly loose and are stable. The enamel to two of the lower entrelac bands has been partially professionally and sensitively filled, not visually distracting. The underside with some minor scuffing concentrated to the edges and consistent with age and gentle handling. An early and powerful example of Knox's "Cymric" designs in very good condition.

Knox’s skill with form and decoration is subtly and beautifully expressed in this early version of one of his most famous vase shapes.  All the elements of his unique aesthetic are present in this example with a strong volumetric presentation reflective of the stonework on Man, the encircling signature entrelac that surrounds it and the decorative coloration that is evocative of colors of his island home.  This elegant synthesis of Knox’s aesthetic sings gently of ancient times and the modern design that characterizes Knox’s genius.
