This pair of symmetrical Rococo-style vases is similar to the craftsmanship by the master locksmith and blacksmith Jean Lamour (1698-1771), maître in 1719 and appointed Serrurier de la Ville de Nancy (locksmith for the city of Nancy) in 1726, after having delivered ironworks to the primatial church. In fact, we find a model identical to these vases on the pilasters of the six gates adorning Place Stanislas in Nancy. This ironwork masterpiece, for which Jean Lamour received the title of Serrurier du Roi (locksmith to the King), was executed between 1752 and 1755 in a forge workshop in the hub of the former archbishop’s church. Of wrought iron with gold leafing, this set earned Nancy the nickname « Ville aux Portes d'Or » (City of Gold Gates). The drawings were provided by his collaborator, the architect Emmanuel Héré (1705-1763), student of Germain Boffrand and who became Premier Architecte de Sa Majesté (first architect to his majesty) in 1738.

Thus, the presented vases could have been replacement parts made in Lamour's or another Lorraine artisan’s workshop on the basis of these designs for an important Lorraine residence.
