Condition

CASE Case in overall good condition with light surfaces scratches and wear consistent with the age of the timepiece. In our opinion, the case may have been lightly polished while retaining strong proportions. The case back has scratches, with one deeper scratch most likely from opening. The crystal has minor scratches. DIAL Dial in overall good condition. The outermost blue track displays fading, with some evidence of fading to the outer black minute track. The 10 o'clock hour marker has a bit of material missing on the 1 and 0. Indexes have been retouched. MOVEMENT The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. ***Please be advised that the bands on this watch are made of materials derived from endangered or otherwise protected species (i.e. alligator and crocodile) and thus not sold with the watch, they are for display purposes only. We will remove these bands prior to international shipping.*** Longines confirms that the serial number 6'035'508 identifies a wrist-chronograph in stainless steel bearing the reference 3870. It is fitted with a Longines manually wound mechanical movement, caliber 13ZN and was invoiced on 16 May 1941 to the company Longines-Wittnauer Watch Co, which was at that time our agent for the USA.

The celebrated calibre 13ZN was introduced in 1936, and is amongst the most sought after chronograph movements of all time.  The 'LXW' stamping on the movement indicates that this watch was sold through a North American agent at the time, and was in fact intended for the American market. This particular watch features a lovely two tone silvered dial that perfectly complements the stainless steel case.
