Jin dynasty tiger-form pillows of this type are rare. Most tiger-form pillows from that era surviving today were modeled with a white slip-covered and outlined headrest often painted with a foliate composition. The present example more subtly incorporates the headrest as a flattened continuation of the beast's back. An example similar to the present is illustrated in Chinese Ceramic Pillows: the Mr. & Mrs. Yeung Wing Tak Gift, Hong Kong, 1993, cat. no. 124. Another similar example formerly with Eskenazi Ltd., London, was offered at Christie's New York, 6^th June 1985, lot 357.
