Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work looks well in its current state. Each of the corners shows a curved scallop, which suggests that the work was originally shaped. The paint layer is probably dirty. Most of the retouches seem to be visible under ultraviolet light in the beard of the Bishop, in the darker colors in his shoulder, in the upper right, across the bottom edge, in all four corners, and in a few other places. There is the possibility that some of the halo may have been broadly retouched at an earlier date. Cleaning should only be carried out with the understanding that other restorations may become apparent.
