Condition
The canvas appears to be lined and is stable on its stretcher. The striking image is is visible beneath a discolored varnish. Craquelure is visible particularly near the upper edge of the painting, and there are some areas of abrasion scattered here and there throughout. A repair, with an associated patch on the reverse, is visible in the upper right quadrant. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish, beneath which may be some additional retouches, although some are difficult to decipher. Some more recent retouching is visible to address aforementioned repair in upper right. Scattered spots and fine strokes of possible strengthening to the shadows, for example along the lower edge of the sitter's chin and in his forehead. The painting has suffered slightly with age and might benefit from a light clean. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.
