Condition

The former: The canvas has a firm lining, the varnish is only marginally discoloured. The painting appears to be in good overall condition, with only a few discoloured old retouchings to some minor scratches in the sky and at the right margin. Inspection under UV reveals a few further retouchings to mask some craquelure and some frame abrasion at the lower right corner. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fair condition. The latter: The painting has a firm lining, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The painting surface is dirty and has some accretions; there are some discoloured retouchings to old scratches visible in the sky. Some of the dark tones have a very slight degree of wear, for example in the hull of the small boat in the foreground. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals only a handful of scattered minor retouchings. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fair condition.

拍品資料及來源

Anton Schranz, father of the artist Giovanni, specialised in painting and engraving landscapes and seascapes, notably of Valetta in Malta. He lived most of his life in Minorca, where he produced similar compositions of Port Mahon, before moving to Malta in 1817. There he found patronage amongst British naval officers who bought his works as topographical souvenirs.
