Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is some slight wear with associated spots of paint loss along all four edges, as well as some visible retouchings, most notably in the blue pigments of the cloth lower left and in Joseph's clothes, in St Catherine's shoulder, arm and in the yellow cloth to the left of that, and in the red pigment of the boy's shawl centre right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as further retouchings along the edges, scattered in the background and in the flesh tones of the Christ child, the Madonna and Joseph, but the work otherwise appears in good condition for a canvas of this size.
