the 34 cm. diameter celestial table globe made up of twelve engraved and hand coloured gores and two polar calottes laid to the ecliptic poles on a papier-mâché and plaster sphere, the axis through the celestial poles, with titular cartouche, a dedicatory cartouche surmounted by the arms of Prince Maurits of Nassau, two further cartouches and portrait of Tycho Brahe to Southern hemisphere; supported in a graduated brass meridian circle, the contemporary oak and ebonised stand with horizon ring, with a crack, on four columnar legs united with cross-stretchers and moulded platform, the engraved paper calendrical scale missing, the engraved gores with some wear and discolouring.
Condition
In overall good condition. The northern atmosphere understandably with minor losses, scuffs, and discolouring, with paper slightly dry. There are some repainted motifs, darkened, clearly visible in the photos. The southern atmosphere in much better condition and retaining some of the original colouring and some of the varnishing. Minor scuffs and losses. There are some repainted motifs, darkened, also clearly visible in the photos. The stand with one open crack to each side and minor old marks and scratches consistent with age and use. And one 2cm. loss to moulding of the lower tier. One patera missing to the lower tier. As stated in the printed catalogue, the engraved paper calendrical scale is missing. This is an important and rare piece, ready to place.
