Condition
- relined - surface slightly worn and thin in some areas, probably due to the relining (neck, background, face) - under UV light, an inscription appears "D'après Dubuffe" (sic), lower left below the signature - repaints in the upper left in the background, on the red jacket on the lower right, one by the lower border, horizontal repaint on the turban - on the face/neck : a few minor retouches especially in the right (neck, chin, moustache, left cheek, left ear, nose, eyebrows, left eyelid) - on the costume : small retouches on the yellow blouse and on the right shoulder - a certain number of repaints in the background

Hassan El Berberi is known for having cared for Zarafa, the giraffe the vice-roy of Egypt, Mehmet Ali, offered to Charles X. She was presented to the king in Paris on July 8th 1827 before being placed in the Jardin des Plantes.
Our painting is a replica after the portrait executed by Claude-Marie Dubufe, kept in the Louvre museum, Paris.
This portrait, which was famous at the time, was copied several times : a version attributed to Alexandre-François Caminade was sold in Enghien on November 23rd 2014. Another replica, a 19th Century French school dated 1827, was sold at Sotheby's New York, in January 2017.
