This bust was made after the Belvedere Apollo. This emblematic sculpture of the papal collections was discovered in 1489. In 1508, the cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, future Pope Jules II, placed it in the Belvedere. The bust is generally reproduced without the drapery and its clasp, as the one of the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, carved by Carlo Albacini in the second half of the 18th century (inv. no. Н.ск-788). The model of the Wallace Collection, (inv. no. S39), an anonymous Roman marble of the early 19th century, presents a larger bust, similar to the present bust.
