Nampar Gyalwa is a form of Tonpa Shenrab, the founder of the Bon religion. The legend portrayed in this thangka appears in the biography of Tonpa Shenrab, and describes the trial and tribulation in the building of the White-black Shimmering Temple at the great ocean to the west of Olmo Lungring, Jeff Watt, Himalayan Art Resources item. no. 18363. The golden roofs of the completed temple appear above Nampar Gyalwa in the painting. The style of the thangka is similar to the Tagla Membar in the collection (see lot 942), including the painted red and yellow borders, suggesting a similar provenance, possibly Amdo.
