Condition
Overall in good condition. Originally designed for Molesworth's historic commission for "Old Lodge," the beds are in original, age appropriate condition. The wood surfaces with scattered scuffs, scratches, nicks, dents, abrasions, losses, areas of rubbing and discoloration, some areas of paint residue, and some surface soiling concentrated to the recesses of the design, all consistent with age and use. The fir portions with natural knots, irregularities, and separations in the wood grain, typical for Inland fir, which have been reinforced with wood infill in some areas by Molesworth at the time of production; some of these areas with scattered losses to the infill, the most prominent losses located on the left and right posts of one of the headboards, the largest measuring approximately 4 5/8 in. long. This same headboard with more prominent abrasions to the rear bases of both posts, the larger measuring approximately 1 ¼ x 7/8 in. The other headboard with a possibly reinforced support beam to the reverse that has caused a split in the wood to the reverse of the proper right post of the measuring approximately 10 ½ x 3/16 x ½ in. The bottom of this same post with a loss to the infill measuring approximately 2 ¾ in. long. The top surfaces of both posts on this headboard each with a drill hole measuring approximately 3/16 in. in diameter. The pitchfork decorative band along the headboard with fading and wear to the paint as well as some minor losses to the relief areas of the design, consistent with age and gentle use. Both footboards with fading to the painted elements, particularly evident in the proper right cowboy motif, as visible in the catalogue illustration. Both footboards also with more prominent rubbing to the top frontal facing edges of all four posts, the largest located on the proper left post of the same aforementioned headboard and measuring approximately ¾ x 1 ¼ in. This same footboard with three overall losses to two of the pitchfork motifs on the proper right side. The other footboard (with the horse motif) with scattered losses to the infill along the length of the proper left post, the largest loss running down from the top of the post and measuring approximately 3 ½ x 1/8 x ½ in. This same headboard with a larger abrasion to the bottom outer facing side of the proper right post, measuring approximately 2 x 3/8 in. Some residual nicks and some wood losses around the metal hardware of the head and footboard due assembly/breakdown of the beds over the years. The lot is offered together with metal support beams with plastic feet, all in very good condition, as well as its associated hardware.
