拍品資料及來源

Doyle Glanville F.R.G.S. (d.1891) was described in his obituary as a noted traveller, artist, and press correspondent, who had seen service in South Africa, Mexico, South America, the West Indies, China, Egypt, and New Guinea. He was correspondent of the Graphic throughout the Zulu War, and afterwards in the Soudan, where he had accompanied the Australian contingent. The majority of these sketches are of New Guinea (there is one section with the title "Sketches in New Guinea" with 14 pages, mostly large watercolour images) and Egypt and the Sudan (about 20 pages, some of Australian troops, one of "Moorish Pilgrims [presumably to Mecca] at Prayer on board P&O SS 'Ancona' "). Others include scenes on board ship (including ladies playing cricket on deck and Japanese performers), Singapore, India, Chinese scenes, etc. The pictures are often accompanied by a considerable amount of text, sometimes descriptive, sometimes humorous.
