拍品資料及來源

Aloys Zötl pursued his father's activity as dyer in Austria, but his passion for animals and his thirst for discoveries led him to travel across Europe. His urge to depict creatures never blemished and he kept drawing until eighteen days before dying. His library was filled with books on natural history, ethnography and travelling. He executed 170 watercolors. This exceptional group remained untouched and unknown to the public, until one of the artist's descendants decided to bring them to Paris, where both studio sales took place in 1955 and 1956. André Breton believed Zötl had a "mental prism displaying [...] the world's wildest animals, [...] while we know the fundamental role they play in the subconscious symbolism."
