Executed in 1930 for publication in Vanity Fair as part of an ongoing series on Modern Art, this elegant, lightly sardonic drawing is exemplary of Miguel Covarrubias' highly sought-after society caricatures of the period. Known for "killing" his subjects, he often borrowed aspects of their personalities in his drawings to sarcastically poke fun at them. In the case of Picasso, he employs the artist's Cubist vocabulary: flattening the plane of the easel, and running his arm through the plane of the canvas, he draws the artist into the void of the blank canvas. His tube of paint lies spent in the bottom of the composition, yet the canvas is empty, save for the dark circle where Picasso directs his attention - a circle exactly the same size and in the same plane as his one unblinking eye. Covarrubias cleverly draws the viewer to connect the two dots, implying perhaps that, as was once said of Monet, Picasso was but "an eye - but what an eye!"
