The use of articulated sculpture follows the Medieval tradition still practiced in present day Spain and South America, of using puppet-like figures or articulated sculptures with highly developed and realistic anatomy, to act out key moments from the Bible. They were often dressed in real clothing and used in processions and religious rituals to emphasize the realism and humanity of the story. Caspicara was one of two master sculptors active in Ecuador, the other being the mestizo artist Bernardo de Legarda, and was famous for his careful portrayal of human anatomy. His major religious works, polychromed wood sculptures, quintessentially Baroque in style, are preserved in the Quito Cathedral and the Church of San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador, and in Popayán, Colombia. His figure of Del Cristo Yacente is preserved in Museo Nacional Banco Central del Ecuador.
