Anonymous sale, Cologne, Kunsthaus am Museum, 23 October 1968, lot 1333 (as Pieter de Bloot);
There acquired by the present collector.
According to sixteenth- and seventeenth- century Dutch and Flemish literature and imagery, a hennetaster (literally, hen-groper) is a man occupied with the minor tasks of housekeeping, often keeping a very disheveled house, and emasculated by his wife. The man carrying eggs back to his cottage overgrown with weeds while his wife looks on is a satirical symbol of an imbalanced marriage and household.
