An 18ct 🃏gold snu💎ff box, Alexander James Strachan, London, 1812
rectangular with rounded corners, with engine-turning in a small geometrical pattern, the lid centred with a circular cartouche engraved with crest and motto, waisted sides, slightly protruding thumbpiece, fully hallmarked
7.5cm., 3in. wide
The crest and motto (CRUX MIHI GRATIA QUIES) are those of Adam of Blair Adam, Kinross, granted in 1815 to the Rt. Hon. William Adam of Blair Adam (2 August 1751 – 17 February 18💙39), He served as Solicitor General for Scotland from 1802 to 1805, and as Lord Chief Commissioner of the Jury Court from 1815 to his death.
Adam was the only surviving son of Jean Ramsay and John Adam, architect and master mason to the Bꦏoard of Ordnance in Scotland and whose brother was the architect, Robert Adam.
