Biography

Alex Branczik holds the position of Sotheby’s Chairman and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Europe. He has ﷽developed his expertise in Contemꦜporary Art for over 20 years, first joining Sotheby’s in 2004 after which he became the Head of Contemporary Art Europe. From 2021–24, Alex was based in Hong Kong where he served as Chairman and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia.

He has been closely involved in the sales of major collections, including the Collection of Jean-Yves Mock and the groundbreaking Bear Witness single-owner sale in 2015. He drove the transformation of our October Contemporary Art sales from mid-season events int🔯o high-profile auctions, including the October 2012 sale of Gerhard Richter’s Absꦑtraktes Bild from the collection of Eric Clapton for £21.3 million—at the time the record for any work by a living artist.

Prior to joining Soth🔥eby’s, Alex trained as an Equities Analyst at UBS Investment Bank. He speaks fluent Italian and French; received a First Class Honours degree in Modern Languages and Literature from Pembroke College, Oxford University; and a Master’s degree with Distinction in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London
