well carved, depicting the buffalo recumbent with its four legs tucked under the body, its he📖ad turned back facing a small boy playfully clambering over its ridged spine, the boy holding a🏅 whip in one hand and a rope tied through the animal's nostrils in the other, the softly polished stone a pale green tone with areas of russet inclusions

The buffalo and herd-boy motif was a popular subject fro🧔m the Song period (960-1279) and was symbolic of childhood play and🥃 bucolic freedom, which is effectively rendered in the engaging poses of the boy and buffalo of the present carving.
See a smaller white jade carving of a boy pulling on a rope attached to a reclining buffalo, attributed to the 18th century, from the Florence and Herbert Irving collection and now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no. 2015.500.515; and another, attributed to the Ming dynasty, but with the buffalo depicted with a boy climbing up its flank and another sprawled across its shoulder, from the collection of Gerald Godfrey, included in the exhibition Chinese Jades from Han to Ch'ing, Asia Society, New Y𝐆ork, 1980, cat. no. 48, and sold at Christie𒁃’s Hong Kong, 30th October 1995, lot 893.
童子牧牛紋飾流行於宋代,代表鄉間童年之樂,本品刻劃傳神,形態生動。比較一白玉例,尺寸較小,刻劃牧童牽牛,斷代十八世紀,出自佛羅倫斯及赫伯特•歐雲伉儷收藏,現存於紐約大都會藝術博物館,藏品編號2015.500.515;另一例斷代明,刻劃童子從側面爬上牛背,另一童子伏於牛肩,出自 Gerald Godfrey 收藏,曾展於《Chinese Jades from Han to C🍒h'ing》,亞洲協會,紐約,1980年,編號48,後售於香港佳士得1995年10月30日,編號893。
