The archaistic motifs and sinuous form of the present waterpot hark back to mythical beast-form waterpots from the Han or Six Dynasties periods. 'Phoenix' waterpots from the Ming dynasty are rare, but became more prevalent during the 17th century. See, for example, a celadon and russet jade waterpot and dropper carved with similarly lush tail feathers, sold in our London rooms, 10th May 2017, lot 6. A white and russet jade waterpot attributed to the late Ming/early Qing period was sold at Christie's New York, 17th March 2016, lot 958. A brushrest carved in the form of two phoenixes, also attributed to the late Ming/early Qing dynasty, was included in the exhibition Jades from China, The Museu🥀m of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 320.
For a Song-Yuan dynasty precedent of the same form, see one illustrated in John Ayers, A Jade Menagerie: Creatures Real and Imaginary from the Worrell Collection, London, 1993, pl. 8. An 18th/19th century white jade example was sold at Christie's New York, 15th September 2011, lot 1001. Compare also a Ming dynasty my🌱thical beast-form waterpot that shares a similar style and sto෴ne to the present, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th November 1978, lot 387.
John Ayers,《A Jade Menagerie: Creatures Real and Imaginary from the Worrell Co♐llection》,倫敦,1993年,圖版8。
