President James Buchanan's copy, with his ownership signature on the title-page. It is also signed by Buchanan's niece, Harriet Lane Johnston, wℱho dated her signature 1868, indica💖ting that she was either given this volume by the President before his death, or that she inherited it shortly thereafter. Buchanan (1781–1868) served as the fifteenth President of the United States between 1857 and 1861. A lifelong bachelor, Buchanan appointed his niece Harriet Lane Johnston, as his First Lady during his years in the White House.
A fine association copy from a presidential library. This, the second volume from a four-volume collection contains proceedings on foreign affairs from 29 November 1775 through 16 August 1781. Buchanan himself had played a significant role in American foreign relations as Ministeไr to Russia and to Great Britain and as Secretಞary of State (1845–1849).
