A cloisonné enamel vase with dragon

Sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

Meiji period, late 19th century


the short-footed spherical vase with tall, everted neck and foliate rim, decorated in variously coloured translucent enamels, depicting a dragon among smoke, flames nd crashing waves on a silver foil hammered ground, the interior decorated with swirling clouds on a translucent intense blue ground, the base sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) was well-known for his ginbari enamels. He opened his own studio in 1882 and exhibited at many national and international exhibitions including Nuremberg 1885, Paris 1889 (where he was awarded a silver medal) and Chicago 1893. At St Louis 1904 he was awarded a ‘grand prize’ and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
