Sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

Meiji period, late 19th century 


the trumpet vase with chrome mounts, decorated in translucent coloured enamels on a hammered silver foil ground, with a flowering branch of foliage with its large leaves extending across the body, the interior similarly decorated, sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

32 cm., 12⅝ in. high

Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) was well-known for his ginbari enamels. He opened his own studio in 1882 and exhibited at many national and international exhibitions including Nuremberg 1885, Paris 1889 (where he was awarded a silver medal) and Chicago 1893. At St Louis 1904 he was awarded a ‘grand prize’ and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
