A Ginbari enamel vase

Sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

Meiji period, late 19th century


the oviform vase with short everted neck, silver and copper gilt mounts, decorated in translucent and transparent coloured enamels on a foil ground over the hammered copper body, silver and gilt brass wires delineate carp leaping up a waterfall from turbulent water beside wisteria and autumn maple on a river bank, sealed Kume (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

15.5 cm., 6¼ in. high

In Chinese legend a carp (koi in Japanese) climbs the waterfall to become a dragon. The Japanese saying koi no taki-nobori (koi climbing the rapids) refers to the spirited fish which throu🌞gh its strength and determination overcomes all obstacles.


Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) was well-known for his ginbari enamels. He﷽ opened his own studio in 1882 and exhibited at many national and international exhibitions including Nuremberg 1885, Paris 1889 (where he was awarded a silver medal) and Chicago 1893.🌠 At St Louis 1904 he was awarded a ‘grand prize’ and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
