What’s in a name? As it pertains to meteorites…quite a bit. Meteorites are named after the places to which they have been “delivered” and this offering had the good fortune to land in Timbuktu. There are two types of stony-iron meteorites, pallasites (see lots 93 and 98) and mesosiderites — and this is an example of the latter. Both consist of approximately equal parts of iron-nickel and silicate. Unlike pallasites, which formed at the boundary of the stony mantle and molten core of an asteroid that experienced a catastrophic collision, mesosiderites are believed to be the result of the semi-molten core of one asteroid colliding into the basaltic surface of a larger asteroid. Tibuktu is one of only four mesosiderites with the B4 designation which indicates its rare chemical make-up and degree of recrystallization. The cut and polished ꦿface reveals an abundance of large-grained metal and silicate inclusions punctuated by a prominent nodule of iron-nickel.
