Signed and dated, this evocative work by Jean-Baptiste Pillement is a fine example of his ability to work on a small scale. Experimenting with the dramatic effects of light, Pillement uses cursory dabs of paint to conjure an atmosphere created by the moonlight and the small campfire on shore. Pillement was a peripatetic artist, travelling to Portugal, England, Italy, Austria and Poland. In Poland, he worked for Stanisław August Poniatowski, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, earning the title 'Premier Peintre du Roi'.
