Description
Complete Sli🐼ce of the Maslyanino Silicated Iron Meteorite
Iron – IAB complex
Novosibirsk Region, Russia (54° 20'N, 84°12'E)
122 x 86 xꦯ 2 mm (4¾ x 3⅓ x ⅒ in). 101.3 g (0.25 lb).
In a Siberian wheat field not far from Siberia’s border with Mongolia, a 26 kilogram meteorite was discovered outside the town of Maslyanino in May 1992. This complete slice features a metallic matrix primarily composed of iron-nickel which originates from a shattered asteroid’s molten core — but the formation of IAB meteorites (see lot 15) is more complex and are believed to have formed near the surface of a chondritic asteroid following an immense impact, which would explain the angular silicate fragments in evidence. Bearing a strong semblance to the historic American meteorite Landes, Maslyanino is a superior example of a silicated iron. This complete slice is bordered with a trim of the meteorite’s exterior surface a🌄nd is loaded with silicates. One side is highly polished to a mirror-finish while the reverse reveals the crystalline habit of its metallic matrix in which silicate inclusions are suspended.
