Description
An American Silver Chevra Kadisha Covered Presentation Cup, Edward C. Moore, New York, the cup circa 1860, the inscription dated 1877
embossed and chased with rococo ornament, fruit and flowers between scalloped rims, the cartouche with Hebrew inscription for presentation, maker's mark only
Height 11¾in. (30 cm)
Engraved in Hebrew in the center: “Presented to the chevrah kedisha gemilat chasadim of Adath Israel [misspelled] by the Parnassim Gershon Levy, Naphtali Brody, Shm♒uel Abramovitz, [5]637 [1877].”
The inscription probably refers to Congregation Adath Israel, founded 1869, at 348-350 E. 57th St. in New York (American Jewish Yearbook, 1899-1900). In 1899 a Burial Society was noted among their auxiliary societies, but none of the𝓰 names on this cup have been able to be confirmed.
Edward C. Moore succeeded to the highly successful silversmith business begun by his father John C. Moore, taking over the firm entirely on his father's retirement🔯 in 1855. Tiffany & Co. were already the firm's primary customer, and in 1868 they acquired the firm outright, and Edward C. Moore became Tiffany's primary silver designer. The fact that this piece does not have any Tiffany retailing marks on it indicates that it was an older piece from the Moore firm re-engraved for presentation, rather than a newly-made piece in the 1870s.
