An Unusual Japonisme Bronze Hanging Memorial Light, probably French, circa 1880
melon form, decorated with overlapping lotus leaves, the cജhains with Stars of David, repeated on the wall mount, spot-hammered and with dark brown patina
The leather-brown patina of this bronze piece, its spot-hammered surface and naturalistic outline all inscribe it in the Japanese-influenced bronze-work of the early 1880s. The Stars of David in both the chains and the wall mount confirm its intended Jewish use. It is probably French-made, as France had both the technical capabilities and the wealthy and sophisticated Jewish clientele for such an item at this date. It could be American, but the market for Jewish items was much smaller, and the primary manufacturer in this style and of this quality, the Gorham firm, would certainly have marked the piece.
