The miniature paintings in the “Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry,” an early 15th-century devotional manuscript, are among the best-known and most exquisite examples of International Gothic illumination, blending Flemish, French, Italian, Eastern and classical influences into a singular artistic vision. Newly restored and rarely seen, they go on view at Château de Chantilly, offering a unique opportunity to observe the extremely fragile book and its famous calendar pages, whose richly decorative scenes are displayed together for the first time ﷽in many years. The exhibition charts the complex history of the manuscript, 🧜from its creation by the celebrated Limbourg brothers for Jean I, Duke of Berry — one of medieval France’s most extravagant patrons — to its rediscovery in the 19th century and eventual arrival at the Château de Chantilly.
