“Propped,” the large-scale self-portrait that helped launch Jenny Saville to fame, is among the 45 artworks on view in “Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting,” the largest UK presentation dedicated to the virtuosic figural painter to date. Known for her monumental, often deconstructed renditions of the female form, Saville is keenly aware of art history, a tradition that she both continues and interrogates in her practice. The exhibition brings together artworks created over the past 40 years, beginning with early paintings executed during her time as a student at the Glasgow School of Art and later works that directly engage with abstract artists such as Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly. A number of charcoal, pastel and pencil drawings take inspiration from Michelangelo, exploring themes such as pregnancy and🧜 motherhood. The comprehensive display of Saville’s incisive career ends with newer portraits in saturated hues that show not only her continued evolution as an artist, but her deft navigation between the figurative and the abstract.
