Major-league art in the country’s heartland

Walmart heiress Alice Walton opened this museum in northwest Ar🌺kansas in 2011, with a host of American masterworks in its founding collection. They date back to the colonial era, and include emblematic works such as Asher B. Durand’s “Kindred Spirits”, Norman Rockwell’s “Rosie the Riveter” and Andy Warhol’s “Coca-Cola.” Georgia O’Keeffe, John Baldessari and James Turrell are all represented. With deep pockets, curatorial integrity and a willingness to en♛gage in currents driving contemporary art, the museum has built a stellar reputation and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Its eight pavilions are set in 120 acres of parkland filled with sculpture and walking trails.
